Maroni Grill -- Tasting Menu in Northport
This past weekend, I finally went to Maroni Grill in Northport. I have been trying to go there for about a year. It is a very small restaurant that has about 24 seats. They are located in the lovely town of Northport on Long Island. Their website (http://www.maronicuisine.com) describes the dining experience.
When we made the reservation, they reminded us they do not accept credit cards or checks. When they confirmed the reservation, they reminded that they only accept cash (so no credit cards or checks) at least three times. Sure enough, no credit card or checks were accepted.
They are know for their tasting menu which costs $120 on the weekend. Expensive in my book. You do receive 18 courses, most of which were bite size portions. When I say bite size portions, these course were the bite size of my nine year old daughter. Don't get me wrong there was more than enough food. My only criticism is that the first 5 or so portions were all served at once. You felt obligated to eat them as fast as possible. It seemed that we were racing the waiter on whether I could finish the course before he could present the next course. Even with that excessive speed in service, our dinner took a solid two hours to complete.
I do not know how to classify the type of food. I was expected an Italian restaurant but they served us Lobster Bisque, Shumai, Spring Rolls, Sashimi, Tater Tots, Sliders in addition to their Italian fare.
I really enjoyed the Lobster Bisque, Shumai and Spring Rolls. Their specialty of the house is the meatballs and it is well deserved. The wine was included with the meal. I have heard that they do this because they do not have a liquor license.
I really enjoyed the dinner but thought that the cost was excessive. They went crazy with the amount of food. All in all, I would recommend this restaurant as a must experience. Just not too often because you end up over indulging yourself.
