Smaller Search Engines -- Clusty.com

I was reading that Google accounts for a majority of all searches in the US and along with Yahoo! and MSN, these three companies account for close to 95% of all searches.  So I started to think, there are a whole bunch of smaller search engines and do any of them offer any more value add.

Personally, I used to love Ask Jeeves since you were able to phrase your query in the form of a question.  A great way to make searching easier to understand for the less sophisticated user.  Sort of like AOL's latest push in security for users.  Now it is just like any other search engine.  A little disappointing.  Also, the results were not as targeted as the big boys.

I did find Clusty.com.  It is listed at the 10,736 most visited website according to Alexa.com.  Clearly a smaller site.  The interesting thing about this site is Clusty queries several top search engines, combines the results, and generates an ordered list based on comparative ranking. This "metasearch" approach helps raise the best results to the top and push search engine spam to the bottom.

But what is really interesting is their search engine groups similar results together into clusters on th left navigation bar.  This allows you to quickly results based upon grouping of similar results.  Rather than scrolling through page after page, the clusters help you find results you may have missed or that were buried deep in the ranked list.

Definitely worth a look especially with the name Clusty.com.  I think that the major search engines will change how they display results to that they are easier to read through.
